MAPLEWOOD > Fuel leaks from train • A train leaked diesel fuel for miles Tuesday morning as it passed through several St. Louis County municipalities, authorities said. No one was injured in the fuel spill, and it never caught fire, said Maplewood Fire Capt. Steve Koppel. No residents had to be evacuated, he said. Fire officials say it's unclear how much fuel spilled or where the leak began. The train had been going northeast when it stopped in Maplewood about 2:45 a.m. near Sutton and Pacific avenues. The fuel presumably had been leaking for miles, through towns that included Kirkwood and Webster Groves, although Koppel said he didn't know how far back the fuel spill began. The fuel was leaking from a rear engine. Union Pacific called a hazardous materials team to clean up the spill. The team managed to stop the leak, which was coming from a container that can hold as much as 3,800 gallons, Koppel said.
